The original origin of the Huddleston's seems to be around Sherborn-in
Elmet, 13 miles east of Leeds in Yorkshire, Eng. There was conjecture that
Aethel ment god in anglo-saxon and Hud ment god in Teutonic, and as the
teutonics invaded east central England in the 900's that the Aethelstan's
were called Huddlestone's. there is a Huddlestone Stone Quarry in the area,
and Winchester Cathedral is suppose to be constructed of this stone. Now
more interesting is Aethelstan, grandson of Alfred the great, a very detailed
map from England show's site of King Aethelstan's palace about 300 yards
away from Huddleston Hall in Sherborn-in-Elmet, so what happened
to Aethelstan's palace?, well when William the Conqueror came in in 1066,
he had many of the castles of the previous rulers torn down, so the people
would forget about the past, and the stones were used to build other homes.
Just about the time Huddleston Hall was built. I have some books about
this area in England, but they really only talk about the Stone Quarry.
There were 2 other area's of England with a lot of Huddleston, one is in
the Cumberland area, and the other around Cambridge, I have more information
on this from the Huddleston Family Tables and from a book done in England
in 1928 by an English George Huddleston. Now my great grandfather Samuel
Brown Huddleston of Dublin,IND found some information from a David Huddleston
who worked in the New York City library in 1880's who had this story of
the Huddleston's being in France and they had a Linen and Lace business.
This David supposedly had this Bible with all the history and names for
generation's. He printed all of this in some booklets called Huddleston
Footprints. Up to the point where it say's that because of religious differences
the Huddleston's decided to leave France in the 1740's and some went to
Germany and some went to Ireland. AND 3 brothers decided to come to America.
On the way over a child Seth was orphaned as his father died on the ship,
and the Gifford's, Benjamin and his wife Elizabeth, who had becomoe friends
on the voyage asked if they might adopt Seth and raise him as their son,
along with their niece Lydia who was with them?. OK so far, Oh just because
Mass. records show Seth son of Seth and Eliz. husband of Lydia Gifford
born in Dartmouth, Ma.1 of the 5th mo. 1744, and Lydia is the daughter
of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Pettis of Boston), and they are Pilgrim descendants,
so that kinda puts a crimp in that story. However now for a while I subscribed
to the Richmond, IN Pallatium-Item newspaper and one day see a report about
a Mr. Huddleston who died in Santa Monica, CA and when the police officer
responded to "a man down report" found it was his own father. So since
I live in Los Angeles I contacted the Santa Monica police and got in touch
with Officer Huddleston, he told me his father came from Germany and had
always spoken German. HMMMMMM, Ok the story continues, I'm in touch
with a lady (Margaret Zerwick) in Wisc. who say's her great grandfather
was a Sea Captain, and settled in America in the 1848 era and that he was
from Ireland. She made a trip to Ireland where she knew he was suppose
to be from and met third cousins, who showed her the 3 story stone building
shere they had a Linen and Lace factory, HMMM again. The Huddleston's from
Ireland seem to use the spelling Hudelson, or Hudleson, the Huddleston's
in Scotland at the present time use the spelling Heddleston, and there
was one family who came to Ohio in the 1800's that have descendants in
the Seattle area. One James Hudelson line from James Heddleston, Huddleston
and various spellings on various documents was from the Mifflin Co area
of Penn's. about 1760, he migrated to Nicholas and Bourbon Co., KY area, and
his descendants to this day use the spelling Hudelson, and Hudleson and
then the majority of the family moved into Indiana. A David Hudelson also
came from Ireland about 1800 and settled in the same counties of Ky. This
should give you enough to completely confuse you on the story, so for now,
bye

I have been researching family history in Australia for some 16 years,
and would now like to know more about my Huddleston line. My maiden name
being Huddleston. My Second Great Grandfather (William Huddleston B1835)
he has on all documents said he was born in Belfast, Ireland. His parents
being John Huddleston and Mary Armstrong. I always believed that Huddleston
was an English name. I have a small book about Millum in Cumberland. In
this book it shows a church with pictures of the burials of Huddlestons
in the church itself. A New Zealand (Huddleston) told me a story about
how the Huddleston's helped Mary Queen of Scots and when this was discovered,
all their lands and titles where taken from them, he said the sons then
went to Ireland, America and Africa. I have not been able to find out if
this story is true or not, but would like to work more on my Huddleston
line.
Regards,
Donna Telfer

I REPLY TO YOUR COMMENTS REGARDING HOW THE HUDDLESTONE
FAMILY HELPED TO SAVE MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS AND CONFIRM THAT THIS IS TRUE.
THE EVENTS OCCURRED AT SAWSTON HALL NEAR CAMBRIDGE IN ENGLAND AND IN FACT
SAWSTON HALL HAS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING PRIESTS HIDING HOLES IN THE
COUNTRY WHICH WAS USED TO HIDE CATHOLIC PRIESTS DURING PERSECUTION. I LIVED
AT SAWSTON HALL UNTIL MY FATHER SOLD IT IN 1980.

The Huddleston's in Early Mass should be descendants of Valentine Huddlestone
of Newport, RI and Dartmouth, Mass.
There was a Heddleston from Scotland that immigrated to Ohio in the
early 1800's. It seems that the Huddlestone's, Huddleston's, Huddleson's
came from England, Hudelson's from Ireland and there is one Huddleston
immigrant from Germany who lived in Santa Monica, CA. The origin of the
family seems to be in Leeds area of Yorkshire about 950 AD and it's conjectured
that Aethel ment god in Anglo Saxon, and Hud ment god in Teutonic, and
when the Teutonics invaded Yorkshire in the 900's that Aethelstan's (grandson
of Alfred the Great) were called Hudleston's, tho also consider that the
Palace of Aethelstan is about 300 yards froM Huddleston Hall in Sherbourn-in-Elmet,
13 miles SE of Leeds. It seems that William the Conqueror had this Castle
disassembled to erase the memory of the early rulers of England from the
population. There is now a Huddle stone quarry that the stone was used
to build Winchester Cathedral. This stone was considered to be of extreme
quality, it was quarried and carried by barge east on the river to the
English Canal and south to London. There was later a settlement in Western
England, Cumberland Co. This is covered to some degree in the back of the
Huddleston FAmily Tables Book. I would like more information on your Mass
lineage, and I have considerable additional data on this line.

I read once that Huddleston means the stone castle of the hooded man.
Anyone familiar with that translation?
